g-010-00697-10oregon550.jpg The new Oregon 550  from Garmin - By now i'm sure most  of you are familiar with Garmin's new touch screen handheld Oregon series handheld gps.  Now they have taken it to the next level by adding a 3.2 megapixel built in camera with a 4x zoom.  It also geo-tags your photos so you not only get great photo memories of your gps adventure but you can also just touch the photo and it will guide you back.  What will they think of next?  O.K.  i'll tell you what they will think of next.  It has 850 megabytes of storage for your photos or you can save them to an optional micro SD card.  Garmin has finally gotten the 3-axis compass added to their product so you don't have to hold it flat any more and of course it includes the barometric altimeter and wireless com with other Oregons.  Click on the image to check out all the features.

The Oregon 550t from Garmin -  So you like what you're hearing about the 550.  So add preloaded topo for the US and then you have the 550t.  All the same feature but you don't have to deal with loading the maps.

Speaking of taking trips, a few years ago when I first started work at Adventure GPS I decided to take our newest product the gpsmap 60C out geocaching.  I had heard a lot about it and I thought I would give it a shot.  I figured it couldn't be too hard, after all they even told you where the cache was.  So I checked Groundspeake and found a cache here in Decatur and put in the coordinates.  First let me say here that nobody told me that you could not get there from here.  Since I had City Navigator loaded the 60CS routed me on the highway as far as possible and then pointed "over younder".  So I parked the car and set out on foot noting by the screen that "over yonder" wasn't very far and I could see a likely hiding place.  I went there but the gps still said it was "over yonder".  There was a high line in that direction so I figured it was hidden next to one of the poles.  I had to wade through tall grass and blackberry brambles among other things.  That is something I would never have done in North Alabama for any other reason but there was a prize waiting a the end.  When I got to the power pole the gpsmap 60CS said it was "over yonder" a little farther so I kept  going and into the woods.  Now the gpsmap 60CS did not have the high sensitivity receiver that the newer gpsmap 60CSx has but the gpsmap 60CSx would not come along for at least two more years.  But anyway I ended up losing signal in the woods and had to find a clearing to find my way.  I found one about 1/4 mile in the direction of "over yonder"  It was a big swamp.  Knowing of the prevalence of huge poisonous snakes and possibly alligators, I began to consider my options while knowing that the prize was still "over yonder".  Then my brain finally found some reason in this madness  and I paged through the screens on the gps until I found the trip computer page and thankfully someone had previously set one of the displays to "distance to destination."  It read .6 miles or roughly 1 kilometer.  Thinking about the snakes and alligators not to mention the pain and itching from insect bites and scratches I got from the blackberry brambles, I decided then to postpone my trip to another time.

To set up your Garmin gps handheld trip computer, page through to the trip computer page and press menu.  You will see several choices but to make sure you get the data you want choose "change data fields" and press enter.  You will see that one of the data windows will have the name of that window highlighted.  Use the screen navigation button (the big round one in the middle with the arrows on it) until you highlight the window you want to change.  Press menu again and you will get a ton of options.  Choose the one you want, press enter and you are set to go.  You can also display that information on the map page but I don't like that option because it takes away from the map display.

Any questions?  There'll be a test later.

There is some outfit called  Smart Alec Adventure GPS giving guided tours in South Dakota.    I don't remember ever being in South Dakota.  Even if we did go we would try not to be a Smart Alec Adventure GPS.  We try to treat our customers with the same respect  we would like.  Nobody likes a Smart Alec.  And I'm sure having a gps wouldn't make it any better.  We do try to be smart with our gps products.  And by smart I mean informed.  If you're having problems operating  your Nuvi 755t or you are so upset with  your Nuvi 855 that you are shouting insults at that lady in the box  give us a call and we'll try to help you through it.  That's 888-477-4386.  If we don't have an answer for you we can get it pretty quick.  That's why we like Garmin.  They answer our phone calls.

I just found out there is an Adventure GPS watch.  I got a picture in my mind  of a cheezy little watch with our logo on it but it turns out to be an expensive gps enabled watch which we don't sell.  We do sell the Forerunner series from Garmin that has a lot of great features for the athlete in training or the regular person that just wants to get into better shape.  We have the Forerunner 405 in stock as well as the Forerunner 405Cx and we are working on the Forerunner 310XT water proof watch for the triathlete.  We should get it sometime in June.  And don't forget the Edge 605 and Edge 705 for you cyclists.  Garmin is working on some great   Mapsource 24K topo maps that you can use with those and other Garmin products.

There is some guy named 'park hopper" that sells Adventure GPS maps for Disneyland and California.  I've been to Disney World and enjoyed it very much but never to Disney Land.  And i want to apologize to our left coast friends but I did not care much for California.  But we are working on a product to download to your Windows Mobile enabled cell phone and subscribe to a service to keep track of your loved ones while they are wandering around a theme park  or your assets that you may need to keep track of.  Hopefully It will be up in a few days.  Or you may want to check out the Garmin Rino series FRS/GMRS gps enabled radios.  We really like the Rino 520HCx and the Rino 530HCx

I would like  to remind you that if you need help or advice on gps you can call us at 888-477-4386 or e-mail us using the address " This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it '   If you would like to share your gps story, e-mail it to us and we will try to post it on our site.  Originallity counts.   I did not make that e-mail address a link because I don't want a ton of e-mails from people concerned about my sex life.
Do any of you find that just a tad creepy or is it just me.
